Audra State Park

The jewel of Barbour County, Audra State Park is an outdoor wonderland. Activities include camping, hiking, Alum cave, picnic areas and swimming in the Middle Fork River. The Middle Fork also boasts challenging whitewater fun for kayak and experienced canoe paddlers. Barbour County Courthouse and Court Room

Located on Main Street in Philippi, Built in 1903 of hand-cut Hummelstown stone. Replaced the original courthouse built in 1843 which was used to house Union troops during the Civil War. Restoration began in 1995 including repair and replacement of the original stained glass dome. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Named "Best Interior Rehabilitation Project" in 1999 by the Main Street Project of the West Virginia Development Office.

Barbour County Historical Museum

Located at the East end of the Covered Bridge in Philippi; Opening in 1985, the museum contains Civil War and other historical memorabilia from Barbour County in a restored train depot. (304) 457-4846

Blue & Gray Park

Located on US 250 and Route 119 at the West end of the Covered Bridge in Philippi; Mini-Park features a flag circle displaying 3 x 5 foot replicas of the five flags that flew over Philippi during the Civil War. The Campbell School

After the Civil War, Barbour County residents built this one-room school near Volga, WV. As one of the county's first free schools, it was the center of education for hundreds of children, providing instruction for primary through eighth grade; until it closed in 1962. In 1992, the restored school was moved to the Alderson-Broaddus College campus to insure its preservation.

Carrolton Bridge

Located on U.S. Route 119 South from Philippi to Secondary 36. Turn left (East) on 36 and go 0.8 miles to Carrollton. Built by Emmett and Daniel O'Brien from 1855-1856 at a cost of $4,819, the bridge is the 2nd oldest covered bridge still existing in West Virginia. It is one of two remaining covered bridges in Barbour County. The bridge was completely renovated in 1962. Repairs were recently made to the bridge because of coal truck damage. The bridge is still in regular use.

The Covered Bridge Bed & Breakfast

The Covered Bridge Bed and Breakfast is a Victorian Gothic built by Cora Mae Crim Peck and her Husband Melville Peck in 1883.Cora Mae had windows brought in over the mountains byfreight wagon and furnished the house with oak and ornate 19th Century furnishings.The house, on the National Register of Historic Places, has been fully restored and is again ready to welcome visitors.

Anna Jarvis House

Welcome Center at the Anna Jarvis Birthplace Museum maintained by Thunder on the Tygart, a non-profit foundation which preserves historic sites.

Junior Memorial Wall and Park

A project of the Junior Improvement Committee, this wall pays tribute to local Veterans. It is a black monument with the words inscribed "Those who served in war and peace." Behind the monument is a wall of brick with veterans names inscribed on each brick with the branch of service and dates served. The wall totals 356 bricks. The American, West Virginia and P.O.W. Flags fly proudly over the wall.

The brand new Philip Barbour High School enrolls almost 800 students in grades 9-12 and has an average class size of 18.9 with a pupil-teacher ratio of 15.5 where teachers have an average of 16.5 years of experience in the classroom. Philip Barbour has a full range of student activities, clubs, music, and sports programs, and one of its recent graduates, a member of the football team, has just been selected to play in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills.

Dayton Park with its brand-new swimming pool is located just off South Main Street behind Kentucky Fried Chicken. Offers ample parking, picnic pavilions, and playgrounds. Philippi Covered Bridge

Philippi; The only two-lane covered bridge still in use on a Federal highway. Erected in 1852, it served the North and South during the Civil War, and has survived floods, ice jams, and damage from trucks for over 150 years. It was two-thirds destroyed by fire on February 2, 1989, but has since been completely restored. (354) 457-4846

Pleasure Valley Trout Farm

Located approximately one mile from Teter Lake; Lake fishermen have an opportunity to catch the big one. Six kinds of trophy trout, and four kinds of catfish. Bait, tackle, lure. (304) 823-2228


This little pond, with giant trout shown rising to the surface, has produced some of the state's record-breaking catches.

Stonewall Jackson Lake

The Stonewall Jackson Resort on Stonewall Jackson Lake- an hour away- takes up a fraction of 23,000 acres of land and water which is open to the public for hunting, fishing, and boating. The Tygart Flyer, between Belington and Elkins, features two separate mountain grades, an "S" curve tunnel, a 1,500' deep canyon, a high bridge over Shavers Fork, the Nova Scotia Rocks, and the 150' wide High Falls of Cheat. The new Tygart Flyer navigates the gorge at Wilmoth Falls.

Tygart Lake State Park

Partly located in Barbour County, Tygart Lake State Park to the North has a twenty-room lodge with public dining room, boat docks, rental boats, swimming, picnicking, and camping areas. Access is through Grafton or, for those with their own boats, through the Pleasant Creek Hunting and Fishing Area. The latter has 40 tent and trailer sites and eight tent-only sites, each with fireplace, picnic table and garbage disposal. Public hunting and fishing in season.
